We published an article in Psiara, the journal of the College of Psychologists of Catalonia, in which we analyzed suicide data in Spain from 1980 to 2022. The key points were:
* Suicide is, above all, a phenomenon among adults. 75% of cases occur among those aged 30 to 79.
* The increase in absolute terms is strongly related to the aging of the population.
* Regarding sex, it is highly correlated with being male. The ratio fluctuates around 3 men for every woman, and only once has it fallen outside the 2 standard deviation tolerance margin. This was in 2010, with 3.58 men for every woman.
* By age group, in cases where a statistical trend is observed, it is only slightly increasing or decreasing.
* Adolescence (defined as the 10 to 19 age group) shows no temporal trend.
* Despite the above, the increase in 2021 for the 10 to 14 age group must be closely monitored, pending the INE (National Statistics Institute) results for 2022.
* In comparison with the European Union, Spain’s data is favorable, being the country with the fifth-lowest rate.
* In our environment, there is also a higher suicide rate among the population with disabilities. Cross-referencing data from the INE and the State Database of People with Disabilities should provide greater insight to guide preventive policies.
